The native range of this species is Syria to Lebanon (Mt. Hermon). It is a bulbous geophyte and grows primarily in the temperate biome.
This plant for described in 1977 as a subspecies of Allium albotunicatum by Fania Kolmann and Avi Shmida. In 2007 it was separated as a distinct species by Brullo et al. The species is characterized by bulblets on its lower stem and by straw coloured flowered with much exerted anthers.
